Garrendenny Lane Interviews Jennifer Slattery

Today we bring you an interview with the very talented Jennifer Slattery who has recently launched a new collected named An Imperfect World with new designs of table runners, napkins and placemats which are digitally printed onto linen – an example of a perfectly traditional yet very different wedding gift I think with such a synergy between new technology and traditional design.
Hi Jennifer, to start, I’m wondering where you started your studies?
I studied Embroidered Textile Design at The National College of Art & Design in Dublin and graduated in 2010. I originally studied Graphic Design at Letterkenny Institute of Technology and graduated in 2002. After 5 years working as a Graphic Designer I decided to go back to college to pursue a love of textiles. Going back to college was the best thing I ever did, it was a wonderful creative journey and I enjoyed every minute of it, I was very lucky to have an amazing tutor at NCAD, Nigel Cheney.

From what does your interest in antique cutlery and china stem? What gave you the idea to embroider them onto table linens?
My grandmother had several beautiful collections of china, these were kept in glass cabinets and only taken out when she had guests. Even as a child I loved the pretty floral patterns. I have inherited some of the china and cutlery that belonged to my granny and I also collect bits and pieces at markets and second hand shops.
Whilst in college at NCAD, as a side project, I created a small collection of table linen for fun, using imagery of the china and cutlery I had inherited. At my degree show, the table linen collection sold out in the first day and I had so many enquiries that I thought it might be worth exploring further as a business.

The digital printed tableware seems more practical than the embroidered.  Is it easy to clean etc?
My table linen collections are not meant to be stored away – they should be used and enjoyed. I have used high quality fabrics that will wash well and hopefully last a very long time. Both the digital printed  linen and the embroidered linen are practical and can be washed by machine. I recommend washing at 30 degrees. If you take care of your table linen it will last a life time.

I see these as perfect wedding presents. Are there other occasions for which they have proved to be popular gifts?
Yes I do have a lot of people buying table linen as wedding gifts. I also have people buying a table runner as a special birthday present or napkin set as an engagement present – perfect for a romantic dinner!

Many congratulations on your own recent engagement.  Has planning for your own wedding inspired any new designs?
Thanks Lorna! Weddings are certainly on my radar now and I am finding a new wave of inspiration! I have had so many ideas for special wedding pieces and hope to launch a custom designed interactive range of embroidered table cloths next year…watch this space!
How many ranges in total can be mixed and matched?  Have you a favourite design?
I love to mix and match collections and I think this allows you to be creative and gives an individual look to your table. I love mixing print with embroidery and have mixed and matched the white Irish linen ‘Silver Spoons’ collection with the ‘Dinner Party’ Napkins and it looks great. My favourite collection is ‘Granny’s China’ which features my granny’s plates and cutlery, it is a fun yet classic range…I don’t think I will ever get tired of it.

What are the challenges facing young designers now?
Overall I think there are lots of positive things happening in Ireland right now for young designers. There are so few design jobs on the offering that this has resulted in a wave of start up design/craft businesses in Ireland in the past couple of years and there is wonderful support in this design community. There are many challenges in setting up a business, apart from the usual financial challenge, one of the biggest challenges is production and producing in Ireland. I have found this to be my biggest challenge, with most of the textile production factories closed I have struggled to find people to produce the work in Ireland, thankfully I have managed to find skilled production in Dublin and will continue to have my work made in Ireland.
If you would like to purchase any of Jennifer’s An Imperfect World collection, this can be done online at our online shop and will be despatched to almost anywhere in the world.  I think the tableware really is a perfect Irish wedding or engagement gift.

Q is for ….. quaint

Happy Monday to you. Hope you had a lovely weekend, we celebrated our 19th wedding anniversary (yes, I was a child bride!) but as hubby was so busy drawing in straw for the winter and our babysitter was away, it ended up that the four of us went out on Saturday night to celebrate! The children enjoyed their first pints – of rock shandy!

Maybe it is because the weather is feeling decidedly autumnal but this post feels very right for my mood at the moment. Quaint cottagey florals are very much ‘in’. Dara Flynn wrote about this in the Sunday Times a couple of weeks ago, how people in the depression-era of the 1930s turned to cosy florals to cheer up their homes and hey, we seem to be doing the same.

A comfy sofa, a throw, a woollen blanket and lots of cosy cushions, a rug on the floor, a fire in the hearth, lots of books, floral curtains, a couple of lamps, a teapot and I am set for the winter – and if they are all in chintzy quaint florals, well, you can double the comforting factor (In fact, I think I am coming down with a cold and am feeling sorry for myself and want to curl up on said sofa in front of said fire with that book!)

Dara was kind enough to mention our Sophia teapot in her article so I thought I’d share it with you here too and check out all our Sophia tableware and crockery.

And here’s a sneak peak of what will be coming to our online shop mid September – Greengate’s new Nordic range is lovely, I particularly love the mix and match crockery of the Valery white and Naomi plum

The vagaries of oilcloths

Published by under My house,Tableware

I have been searching for the perfect oil cloth for months and my poor table has been begging me to protect it from the rigours of my children.  The problems were that the diameter of our round table is 54 in and most oil cloths are either 54 in or 48 in wide whereas I needed one at least 60in.  The other problems were that I couldn’t find the pattern or colour that would co-ordinate with my roman blinds.

I loved this oilcloth from Greengate but it just wasn’t available in the right width.

I liked the fun aspect of this cupcake one (and apologies, I can’t remember where it is from) but I decided it wouldn’t help my figure at all as I would be ‘forced’ into baking every day!

But I digress, I won’t keep you in suspense any longer. I eventually found exactly what I was looking for at The Blue Door in Naas and they offer an online service too.  Their oilcloths are wider than normal at 145 cm so are ideal for what I was looking for.  They have a lovely selection of Oilcloths and the one I picked is Mona.  They are not the typical oilcloths with the shiny surface but a matt surface that can be wiped clean and can be washed at a low temperature in the machine. Now I did query the amount of wiping as I must have the messiest children in the country but they assured me that if spillages are wiped as soon as possible, they will come out.  Now I have had to put it into the machine once already and it is due to go in again so I am either an extremely tardy mother or I have incredibly messy children, but it washes fine.

And I am also incredibly disorganized as I can’t find the photo I took of the whole table, elegantly set with lovely crockery.  Here is one from Mother’s day when I was presented with lovely school made badges, cards and homepicked snowdrops – you can just about see the oilcloth!!

This week is shaping up to be pretty busy so there may not be any more blog posts until after the bank holiday, I hope you all have a lovely weekend, x
