Parkertex on Straw

My first blog! The website is well underway and I’ve been meaning to start a blog ever since I did an introductory course on blogs (basically I had heard abou them but didn’t know what they were) about a year ago with Keith Bohanna and the Carlow Enterprise Board. I was intending to blog about the whole process of starting up a business, maybe even gaining some comments and pearls of wisdom from readers who’d already set up their own businesses but of course, that didn’t happen. Anyway, here it is at last – the business started in November and it is called Garrendenny Lane Interiors, Garrendenny being the name of the townsland. We are located in the country although not far from the civilisation of the towns of Carlow, Athy, Portlaoise and Kilkenny.

I decided to work from home rather than rent a unit or shop in town partly because I have two kids aged 5 and 3 and I want to work part-time as well as be here when they come home from school. (This was a huge change for me – before I had kids, I was determined that I was going back to work full-time and they were going to the creche almost asap but they managed to change my mind on all this v quickly!) I also want to offer a personal and friendly service where people can just sit by the fire and enjoy a coffee if they wish to take their time.

For the time being, I am using three rooms in my house for the display and sale of furniture, accessories and gifts. I also have a number of fabric and wallpaper collections (e.g. Designers Guild, GP& J Baker, Andrew Martin, Sanderson and Voyage) and can offer interior design advice if people want. We do have some lovely stone outhouses what would be wonderful for housing the shop but I’m afraid there’s a milking parlour and cattle shed very close to them which as you can imagine, can whiff a bit at times! Maybe in the future ….. .

This blog will vary in its themes, I think. Some days, I’ll be writing about the latest arrivals in the shop or the latest fabric collections or the new looks for the coming season. Another day, I could be writing about the joys and realities of being a mum or rambling on about what is happening on the farm or just my thoughts for the day.
