If you are looking for ways to brighten up your stairs instead of getting a carpet or a stair runner – what about tiles or wallpaper or stencilling?  My stairs have an oak tread and the risers are painted in Farrow and Ball’s Clunch but they are positively boring compared to these!  How much time would it take though?

I like the idea of having co-ordinated wallpapers on the risers – you don’t have the hard work of matching the design perfectly, it creates more interest, they should be protected sufficiently with 3 or 4 coats of varnish and they aren’t permanent – you can change them relatively inexpensively when the fancy takes you – or you have the time!
