Interior Design Trends Autumn Winter 2011/2012

30/10/2011

Winter is coming and as it edges closer, you will be delighted to hear that by including some elements of this year’s interior design trends in your home, you can make it even cosier and more welcoming.

We are all tired of hearing about the doom and gloom. We can’t do anything about the Greek crisis or  American debt but we can ensure that our homes are warm, inviting and convivial.  This year more than ever before, the emphasis at the interior design shows seems to be on creating a cocoon, making your home a cosy sanctuary against the elements but it is also about bringing the outside in and embracing nature as well as taking the best aspects of design from previous decades.

The main theme at Maison D’Objet seemed to be that of bringing an entire woodland into your design scheme. Yes, you read that correctly - the entire woodland from trees to logs to woodland animals to wild deer.   If you can imagine the Scottish highland look with plenty of wooden panelling, large stag heads on the wall, tartan rugs and fur throws where you can curl up in front of a roaring fire with a woollen blanket and a hand knitted cushion. Other themes were very similar but with a more ‘Switzerland snow’ or Canadian Rockie’s log cabin feel.  Not everyone is going to want to use birch tree trunks as room dividers or indeed place a colossal stag’s head on their wall so here’s our suggestions for how you can introduce some elements of the latest trends to your home so that it will be bang on trend as well as being cosy this winter.

Home Knits

Put away all the light ‘summer’ cushions until next year and invest in some hand knitted cushions for your sofa.  If you don’t feel up to getting the knitting needles clacking yourself, there are many small businesses in Ireland selling hand knitted homewares now using quality Irish wools or check out Etsy for a worldwide selection.  And when you are considering the hand knits, don’t forget about knitted baskets or containers for adding texture to your room décor.  Warmth can be added to our interiors with the tactile nature of various textures and layers.

Woodland Influences

It seems that the trends have moved on from ‘bringing the garden indoors’ or using your garden as an extra ‘room’, in that the emphasis is now on the fauna and flora of our woodlands.  Nevertheless, you don’t have to bring in the contents of your local forest - you can simply add some woodland detail to your walls with wallpaper panels or wallpaper designs. There is a wide choice of wallpapers available now that feature trees - be it leaf designs, depictions of birch tree trunks as in Cole & Son’s designs, the rather retro Little Trees wallpaper design by Miss Print or various representation of Norwegian forests on Scandinavian Surface’s wallpaper panels. If covering a wall with trees is too large a surface area for you, then you could add a couple of cushions with a ‘tree design’ to your armchair or sofa or include a log-lookalike vase or candleholder on your mantelpiece.

Coupled with the plethora of deer images available on cushions, on wallpapers, on fabrics and as wall mounted stag heads - there is definite scope there to create a Scottish highland interior.  However, there are many styles to suit a more contemporary or refined home décor. Many of the high street shops have smaller deer heads available in a variety of materials - choose from flock, silver, chrome, aluminium, cardboard, papier mache and even tapestry, therefore it is possible to source one of these fashionable accessory and make it work within a contemporary streamlined interior.

Deer weren’t the other animals to be featured at Maison although they were the most popular. You can choose between various breeds of dogs (pugs and boxers seem to be the most popular choices), cats, squirrels and rabbits that are featured on lampshades, cushions and wallpapers.  Some were stylish, some were quirky and some were just strange!  Almost any animal featured on any interiors accessory will be considered fashionable this winter.

Birds are proving popular too, you can choose from chaffinches, sparrows and finches and the most popular is definitely the wise old owl.  Featured on cushions, pillowcases, wall stickers, wallpapers, candles, lampshades, rugs, pillows, cookie jars and almost everything you can think of.  Very popular in the mid 1970s, the owl has definitely made a comeback and the designs range from being very baby-centred to very sophisticated.

Back to the 50s

While mid century furniture has been very popular again for some time, together with an emphasis on up cycling, the retro theme is stronger than ever.  Humourous and quirky, you can add as little or as much as you wish to a room, from retro lampshades and cushions to kitchen accessories that resemble utensils and imagery from the 1950s to a complete 1950s kitchen, complete with discreet modern conveniences and technologies of course.

Colour Brights

Minimalism has disappeared and with it has gone the cool whites and pale greys. Warm greys warmed further by mauves and purples were readily available in numerous displays.  However, zestier colour schemes which include brilliant blues, hot pinks and sizzling oranges with the most popular colour of all - indigo - are going to be seen more and more with solid blocks of colour on sofas and other large areas of the home.  Designers Guild are still one of the bravest and most inspiring designers and producers of colourful wallpapers and fabrics year after year and their new Amrapali collection is no exception.  As well as incorporating solid blocks of colour, large floral patterns with blowsy colourful flowers are making a comeback too.

Seeing the beauty in the ordinary

And as we are harking back to the past with hand knitted homewares, retro kitchens, woollen blankets, stacks of logs, the emphasis is on keeping the harshness of exterior pressures outside the home and maintaining a cosy, bright and welcoming interior this winter.  There also seems to be a return to displaying your crockery and other kitchen accessories on open shelves and dressers in the kitchen.  Glass Jars and glass containers in various sizes and shapes can be purchased  in many shops in order to display your dried foods, your cereals, your baking ingredients, your fruit. If you can display these in a pantry off the kitchen, even better.

There was a definite emphasis on celebrating the practical nature and the attractiveness of ordinary items with the most striking and unusual at Maison probably being the high stack of large tractor tyres positioned between armchairs in a room set by Andrew Martin.  The inclusion of cutlery incorporated into accessories such as plate holders and embroidered into table linens and cushions will also be seen more and more.  It is all about recognising the beauty in ordinary items and celebrating them.

The trends for the coming season are available in so many different materials, sizes, styles and on so many various accessories that it is possible to be bang on trend by including a couple of cushions featuring dogs or perhaps an Owl candle or even a white ceramic deer head wouldn’t look out of place hanging on a wall in a streamlined Scandinavian off white interior.
