Children’s bedrooms can become very colourful once their toys, pictures, bedlinen, rugs and curtains have been added to the scheme so it can often be a good idea to paint or wallpaper the walls in a neutral colour particularly if the room is on the smaller side. Girls tend to like pink but too much pink in a room can be overwhelming - calm it with the addition of some soft greens or aquas. Many new wallpapers and fabrics for girls now incorporate these colours within the pattern, thereby limiting the amount of pink that is used. Designers Guild has just launched a new kids collection ‘Around the World’ that is beautifully funky and colourful and a little will go a long way in a child’s bedroom.
Don’t spend a lot of money on themes that will last a relatively short time, such as Bob the Builder or Barbie. However, if your child shows a genuine regard for a particular theme that may well last many years, it can be well worthwhile investing in a design that will define the bedroom as their personal space. It is relatively easy to create a nautical theme with navy, red and blues in checks and stripes along with some accessories. The D’ya-think-e-saurus designs by Paperboy will appeal to all dinosaur lovers. For girls who love flowers, there is a plethora of choice.
All children love playing with stickers and the Mae fabric stickers are ideal as they are removable, scrunchable, wipeable and re-usable. They also look wonderful on a bare wall and their many designs mean that there is a design for every taste.
Storage is essential for children’s bedrooms. Toys, books and accessories tend to accumulate. Bookshelves at an easy reach from the child’s bed are a good idea so they can choose their bedtime read before they snuggle down. Storage units with colourful tubs or baskets are excellent for holding items such as lego, bricks and vehicles. It is much easier persuading children to tidy up if it is easier for them, so having tubs to put designated items back into or having shelves with plenty of space makes it easier for young children to tidy away their toys. A bed with drawers underneath provides handy extra space for clothing or toys.
Above all, let your child make some choices although you can guide them to make the right ones! Enjoy creating a cheery, fun and creative place for your child to play and sleep.
